As part of our broader 2030 Movement Strategy, the City of Darwin is excited to be partnering with Bicycle Network to introduce the 2024 Active Paths and Open Streets Initiative with Karama and Nightcliff Primary. The initiative aims to promote active transport to and from school by providing a fun, safe, and accessible space for students.
Active Paths
The Active Paths component of the initiative involved student leaders identifying common, safe, and active travel routes to school with input from teachers and the City of Darwin. Colourful directional decals will be installed on the footpaths along these routes, providing halfway drop-off points for students who can't travel the entire distance to school.
Active Paths give all students the opportunity to try riding, walking, scooting, or skating to school. The schools will be able to use the provided Active Paths routes and map as a continuing resource to promote active transport within their school community.
Open Streets
The Open Streets events mark the launch of the Active Paths for our partnering schools, where a section of street to the school's entrance will be closed to traffic and opened to children, parents, and teachers.
Hector the Safety Cat will visit the schools the week before the event during assemblies to educate children on road safety for participating in active transport. Hector will also make an appearance on the event launch day from 7:30 am to 8:00 am to celebrate the success of the initiative.
Road closure information
So that we can safely have our families walk or ride to work during the program, there will be some temporary road closures in place.
Traffic management will be in place, and Bicycle Network team members on site to help.

- Road closure details: Livistona Rd (Koolinda Cres - Applegum Dr). One side of Livistona Rd will remain open for the scheduled bus routes with Traffic Management assistance.
- Active paths: The Active Paths will begin from Koolama Court, Manunda Terrace, Mahogany Terrace, and Applegum Drive.
Nightcliff Primary School
- Event date: Friday 9 August 2024
- Event time: 7:00 am - 8:00 am
- Road closure time: 2 hrs (6:30 am - 8:30 am)
- Road closure details: Cunjevoi Cres (After Jacaranda Ave to Pandanus St only - Nightcliff Primary side).
- Active paths: The Active Paths will begin from Sandalwood Street, Aralia Street, Clarke Crescent, and Kurranjong Crescent.
