The AFP is encouraging the community to support Australian police and their families through the 2024 AFP Legacy fundraising auction.
AFP Legacy is a not-for-profit organisation that provides financial and compassionate support to families of AFP employees who die in service to their communities.
AFP Legacy currently supports more than 50 'legatees' who are the spouse or child of a deceased employee, through financial and emotional assistance that includes bereavement payments, and funding towards education, medical fees, meal delivery, extracurricular activities and community participation.
As a not-for-profit organisation, AFP Legacy relies on the generosity of donors, sponsorship and fundraising. It is hoped this year's auction will help it to keep providing crucial support for AFP families.
AFP Legacy board member, Commander Gail McClure, said AFP employees chose a career that focused on serving the community and AFP Legacy aimed to support their families when they needed it most.
"That support includes everything from assisting with funeral arrangements to helping children through school," Commander McClure said.
"The journey for bereaved families is a long one and AFP Legacy is there every step of the way, however, it comes at a price.
"AFP Legacy is a charity that relies solely on the goodwill of donors and sponsors and the auction features wonderful prizes donated by very generous supporters."
Auction items include a five-star weekend stay in Melbourne, a Taylor Swift signed and framed microphone, an Australian One Day International shirt signed by the World Cup winning men's cricket team, a seven-night holiday in Thailand, artwork, photography gift certificates, and a Matildas jersey signed by Sam Kerr.
The public can bid on the silent auction items, with categories from artwork, fashion, travel and accommodation, to indulgence packages, sporting experiences, memorabilia and entertainment packages.
Public bids for the silent and live auctions close at 7pm AEDT Saturday, 26 October, 2024. Successful bidders will receive a notification on their phone.
So far more than $10,000 in bids has been raised.
AFP Legacy is also unveiling a new design for the AFP Legacy mascot, Constable Kenny Koala, which will be available for purchase from Monday, 28 October, 2024.
AFP Legacy was first established in 2004 as the Chequered Ribbon Association to support police families in need.
