As we approach the federal election it's time for us as primary producers to recognise the urgency of the moment.
Our National Farmers Federation (NFF) President David Jochinke put it well when he said the impending Federal Election marks a watershed moment for Agriculture and the regions.
During the NFF election platform launch, David called for a 'comprehensive framework to safeguard our ability to feed and clothe Australians amid growing disruptions'.
It is time for bold reform.
We cannot afford to let past policy failures, particularly around the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act to continue to undermine our industry.
Politics meant the much-needed overhaul was kicked down the road instead of using facts and science to inform this crucial Act. This is our chance to shape the future of agriculture.
It's not the only threat we face. The ongoing campaign to classify Buffel grass as a weed is a direct attack on our livelihoods and should be treated as such.
Buffel is crucial for our grazing systems, enhancing pasture productivity and supporting farmers across Queensland.
We will not stand idly by while misinformed agendas threaten our land. If they want a fight they will have one. If this stupidity continues, it's time to push back and advocate for a sensible approach that recognises the value that Buffel grass gives to our industry.
The threats to the live trade from the Greens and the so-called Teal party must also be met with decisive action. A ban on this vital industry is not just an attack on our economic stability it is an attack on our way of life. Enough is enough.
The live cattle trade is essential for income and jobs in our communities. We must rally together to defend our industry and ensure that it thrives rather than faces unnecessary restrictions.
Food security - as the recent report to government stated - is as critical as National defence and it's high time we demand that recognition form all sides of the political divide. In a world fraught with uncertainty, our ability to feed ourselves must be an absolute priority.
We must push for policies that bolster local food production and protect our farmers. Ensure that our industry receives the resources and support it needs to thrive into the future.
This election is a rallying point for all primary producers. We must unite to advocate for policies that support local food systems and our sustainable practices. It's about ensuring that every Australian has access to healthy, affordable food. Let's build resilient communities that can withstand the challenges ahead.
We need to ignite and harness the passion in the next generation, by supporting educational initiatives and encouraging youth engagement, we can inspire young people to careers in agriculture. The future of our industry depends on it.
As primary producers, we hold the power in our hands. When we head to the polls and before we must wield our votes like a weapon to shape the future of agriculture in our regions.
Engage with your representatives and urban cousins. Demand answers and hold them accountable to our needs.
This federal election is not just another political event, it is a pivotal battle for our industry.
The decisions made could impact our livelihoods, our communities, and the environment for generations to come. Your participation is not just important, it is crucial.
Together we can make a vibrant future for agriculture, so let's make sure our voices are heard by all and influence that vote on May 3 in favour of agriculture.
