As the sun shone over Sir Thomas Blamey Square, jets roared across the sky to welcome the new Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Stephen Chappell, and farewell the outgoing Chief, Air Marshal Robert Chipman, during a Change of Command Parade today in Canberra.
Air Marshal Chipman was appointed Chief of Air Force (CAF) in July 2022, leading the Air Force in its response to the Defence Strategic Review and the implementation of the National Defence Strategy.
As he reflected upon his time in the role, he noted some of Air Force's achievements during his tenure.
"I will never cease to be impressed by the innovation and industry of our aviators," Air Marshal Chipman said.
"I've met aviators using solar panels designed for a camping fridge to power and proof test a command vehicle that enables our air battle managers to control airspace from the back of a Land Rover wherever they can get an internet signal.
"Air Force Training Group have shaved weeks off our courses, increased training throughput, and introduced tailored physical conditioning to dramatically improve our completion rates.
"Last week I celebrated the graduation of our latest air weapons instructors; our next generation of combat leaders.
"I take no credit for this work - it's being delivered by our aviators, who understand our strategic context and commit their efforts to find a better way. It has been inspiring to witness."

In his final act as chief, Air Marshal Chipman handed the Sir Richard Williams sword to incoming Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Chappell, handing over command of the Air Force.
Air Marshal Chappell becomes the 28th Chief of Air Force at a critical time as it becomes a more integrated, focused force. Air Marshal Chappell has vast experience in strategic level management and situational awareness of current and potential ADF and wider Government commitments.
The incoming Chief humbly outlined the force's key to success - looking after each other through the embodiment of Defence values and doing the ordinary things extraordinarily well.
"My role as your Chief of Air Force is to serve you, our aviators, and our nation, in this noble endeavour," Air Marshal Chappell said in his inaugural address.
"My initial calling continues to resonate - to lead with clarity, and collaboratively, with my ADF and APS colleagues. To support you to generate and deliver air power as part of an integrated, focused force.
"And to ensure, if called upon, we are well prepared to fight in defence of our nation and its interests."
