Indigenous youths have been given a taste of Air Force life at one of the world's biggest airshows. The opportunity at the Australian International Airshow gave a unique glimpse into military careers to the students.
Royal Australian Air Force local Indigenous Liaison Officer, Leading Aircraftman Christopher Timoti, was instrumental in organising the program at the event, for the first time.
"This immersive experience included access to flight simulators, our different aircraft, military working dogs, and the Australian Defence Force Drone Racing team,
"The kids interacted with pilots, armament technicians, avionic technicians and security forces, gaining insights into various career paths within the ADF.
"It offered the 19 students from across Victoria, a comprehensive look at the diverse roles within Defence, while gaining insights into various career paths." Leading Aircraftman Timoti said
Flight Lieutenant Norman Grogan, also an Indigenous Liaison Officer, and a mentor on the program since 2018, highlighted the importance of representation and mentorship in inspiring the next generation of Indigenous aviators.
"If you can see them, you can be them,
"This exposure piece is more than just a recruitment tool, it's about revealing the behind the scenes operations that the public rarely see." Flight Lieutenant Grogan said.
The Indigenous Youth Program is designed to give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students the opportunity to experience Defence culture and learn about the various roles undertaken by Air Force aviators.
