AI's Role in Child Sexual Abuse Explored in New Study

A new study by the Australian Institute of Criminology reviewed available research on the intersection between artificial intelligence (AI) and child sexual abuse, identifying 33 empirical studies focused on AI tools aimed at prevention and disruption.

  • The most common uses of AI for prevention and disruption were analysing images, audio or video to detect child sexual abuse material (CSAM), and language processing to detect child sexual offenders through online conversations.
  • AI was also used in analysing CSAM file names and paths, detecting features in CSAM for categorisation or matching across media, understanding the online behaviours of offenders, and analysing case reports of child abuse.
  • However, many AI technologies are currently not fit for purpose and more opportunities to integrate AI technology into existing prevention strategies should be explored. Tools must be strictly evaluated before being considered for adoption.
