Today the Albanese government launched the Fighting Scams Campaign, which includes TV commercials and social media ads running until 22 March.
The Fighting Scams Campaign will equip Australians with simple, actionable strategies to guard against scams.
The aim of the campaign is to increase awareness and action of three simple, memorable steps to keep us all safe from scams.
The key message:
- STOP: before sharing personal information
- CHECK: that you know who you're dealing with
- PROTECT: against scams by taking actions like reporting them to Scamwatch.gov.au
The Albanese government has a comprehensive plan to make Australia the toughest target in the world for scammers. This includes everyone doing their bit, whether government, business, or individuals.
The government's action is helping keep people's money safe with our prevention strategy showing early signs of success.
Losses have been almost cut in half since we stood up the National Anti‑Scam Centre. Scamwatch data shows reported scam losses dropped by over 40 per cent in the 2023-24 financial year compared to the previous year.
The Albanese government's Scams Prevention Framework is a vital next step and will ensure Australia is the toughest target for scammers. The government's legislation will put obligations on banks, social media companies and telcos to prevent scams or face hefty fines and compensation for victims.
