The Finocchiaro CLP Government is delivering on its commitment of 2025 being a year of action, certainty and security as the first Alice Springs-Cairns direct flight takes off today.
In a major boost for the Red Centre, the new Alice Springs to Cairns route offers greater connectivity for international visitors coming into Alice Springs and beyond.
The three-times weekly service will be operated by Airnorth's Embraer E190 jet and deliver more than 30,000 annual seats further enhancing domestic and international travel itineraries.
This strategic link means travellers from key international markets can experience the Great Barrier Reef and the Red Centre in one seamless itinerary.
It also means Alice Springs residents can now use Cairns as a gateway to Fiji and Japan - improving the liveability of the Territory.
Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations Robyn Cahill said the new route highlighted the CLP Government's commitment to rebuilding the Territory's economy.
"This new service is a game-changer for Central Australia, providing greater access for visitors, businesses, and investors," she said.
"Improved air connectivity is key to unlocking opportunities across tourism, trade, and regional development.
"This route will attract more visitors to the Northern Territory while also supporting business and industry growth. It's a fantastic outcome for both regions."
The CLP Government has announced four new aviation routes in 2025, including Indonesia AirAsia 3-weekly service between Darwin and Bali, Jetstar 4-weekly seasonal service between Darwin and Gold Coast, and AirAsia Malaysia 4-weekly service between Darwin and Kuala Lumpur.
Minister for Logistics and Infrastructure Bill Yan said: "This new direct flight is a big win for Central Australia - it boosts connectivity, supports local tourism operators, and makes it easier for families, businesses and visitors to move in and out of Alice Springs."
Airnorth CEO Daniel Bowden said: "The Alice Springs-Cairns route strengthens Australia's regional network, linking two dynamic destinations that offer unique tourism experiences and business opportunities."
Executive General Manager - Airports at Airport Development Group Rob Porter said: "This new service is a testament to the strong partnerships between Airnorth, the Northern Territory Government, and Airport Development Group."
"It demonstrates our shared commitment to expanding air connectivity and driving economic benefits for Alice Springs and the wider Territory," he said.
The Alice Springs-Cairns route has been supported by the Territory Aviation Attraction Scheme which secures aviation connectivity, choice and competition.
Promotional sales fares start from $299 one way between Alice Springs and Cairns.
