All Eyes On US Election

The United States is bracing for civil unrest as polls close on the final day of voting for the next President's election.

Rodrigo Praino, Professor of Politics and Public Policy at Flinders University says: "US democracy is in the midst of unprecedented attack, including the most recent alarming Republican proposal of calling for state legislatures to themselves select electors instead of relying on the popular vote in states recently hit by natural disaster.

"While this threat to the democratic voting process will certainly not proceed, it's another sign of the depths this year's campaign is spiralling," says Professor Praino, who is Director of the Jeff Bleich Centre for Democracy and Disruptive Technologies at the College of Business, Government and Law.

"In the final days of the US presidential campaign, voting 'swings' are almost too close to measure.

"While Democrats candidate Kamala Harris appears to be slightly ahead in the key states of Michigan and Wisconsin – as well as Georgia, North Carolina and Nevada – and Republican Donald Trump has a lead in Arizona and appears to be gaining ground in Pennsylvania, voting is still too close to call either way.

"Margins in the key seats are often razor thin so we will not know the outcome until the final count is done."

On Wednesday, 6 November (from 10am), Flinders University experts will run a full day of live commentary on a wide range of issues stemming from one of the most crucial US polls in history.

'US election results – as it happens' included expert panel discussions on social media misinformation, economic and immigration policies, foreign policy, women's and gender issues in voting, drugs and pharmaceuticals and the House and Senate elections.

The day's proceedings will conclude with a live cross to Jeff Bleich, the former US Ambassador to Australia, in the the US.
