All Triumph at Western Sydney Marathon

NSW Office of Sport

A new course, a return to Spring and a 74-year-old seasoned marathon veteran are just some of the highlights from this year's Western Sydney Marathon.

In its 12th year, over 1200 participants of all ages and abilities gathered at the Sydney International Regatta Centre to take on Western Sydney's very own running challenge. The categories included a two-kilometre Youth Dash for kids, five-kilometre Family Fun Run, 10-kilometre run, half marathon and marathon.

After returning to its original Spring timeslot, runners experienced warmer conditions while making their way around the exciting new course through Penrith Whitewater Stadium and along the waters of the Regatta Centre.

74-year-old marathon runner Ray James from Balmain has run every Western Sydney Marathon and is approaching his 400th marathon.:

"The Western Sydney Marathon is a great community event. I look forward to running it every year and catching up with friends.

"The course at Sydney International Regatta Centre is flat and fast, and the inclusion of Penrith Whitewater Stadium this year provided runners with great views of the Blue Mountains and Penrith Lakes.

"I encourage everyone, from elite runners to families wanting to get active, to join next year and enjoy one of the best running events in Sydney."

Office of Sport Chief Executive Karen Jones said:

"A huge congratulations to everyone who participated in today's event – and an extra special shout out to all of our winners."

"We are incredibly proud to have delivered the Western Sydney Marathon since 2010 – giving people in the Western Sydney region and surrounds an opportunity to get outdoors, have fun and connect with community.

"The fact runners like Ray keep coming back every year to compete is testament to the esteem the event is held in among Sydney runners."
