AMA Calls For Dedicated Medicine Shortage Forum

Australian Medical Association

AMA proposes new forum to improve coordination and communication around medicine shortages and supply chain disruptions.

The Federal AMA is advocating for the establishment of a dedicated medicine shortage forum to enhance the management of critical medicine supplies and improve communication to healthcare providers.

In our submission to the Therapeutic Goods Administration's (TGA) proposed changes to reporting requirements, we have suggested implementing a "traffic light" system to communicate phased supply shortages and recommended key stakeholders from medicine, pharmacy, wholesalers, and sponsors form a dedicated forum for better coordination.

In media statements, AMA President Dr Danielle McMullen emphasised that while the TGA manages shortages effectively, a regular forum could ensure more proactive processes and clearer communication to doctors, pharmacists, and patients.

The AMA supports strengthening Australia's capacity to manage medicine shortages but has expressed some concerns, including the proposed extension of notice periods for discontinued drugs.
