The LNP has announced it will exempt GPs from payroll tax if it wins the Queensland state election on 26 October.
Some great news from AMA Queensland this week.
After three years of fierce advocacy from AMA Queensland, the LNP Opposition has announced it will exempt GPs from payroll tax if it wins the Queensland state election on 26 October.
This has been a hard-fought win and we are urging political leaders in all states and territories to follow suit.
AMA President Dr Danielle McMullen congratulated AMA Queensland on the result.
"After listening to the AMA, they've agreed to scrap payroll tax in general practice if they are successful in the Queensland election," she wrote on LinkedIn. "The mess of taxes around the country is costing patients money. Other states should follow this lead."
AMA Queensland President Dr Nick Yim told members he was delighted to have three AMA Queensland members and Councillors - all GPs - stand beside Queensland Opposition Leader David Crisafulli and shadow ministers to announce this important policy promise, highlighting the AMA's key role in achieving this for members and patients.
"We are now encouraging all parties to extend the exemption to all private practices, in line with existing arrangements for all public and most private hospitals.
"This is an unfair tax. Private medical practices have complied with the law since 2008, but a new interpretation based on a New South Wales tribunal ruling changed the goalposts in 2021. Small businesses cannot be expected to absorb a new tax, particularly a backdated one. That is why AMA Queensland fought so hard for our members."
Congratulations AMA Queensland.
