AMA: Shield Kids from Unhealthy Food Ads

Australian Medical Association

The Food for Health Alliance - including the AMA - have been joined by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver this week in calling on the government to regulate unhealthy food marketing.

This week we joined our allies in the Food for Health Alliance, and other high-profile individuals including celebrity chef Jamie Oliver and former Australian of the Year Dr James Muecke in sending an open letter to the Health Minister calling for regulation of unhealthy food marketing which targets children.

The letter asks: to protect children from unhealthy food marketing in all areas of their lives by using regulation to:

  • make online environments free from unhealthy food marketing
  • ensure TV, radio and similar media are free from unhealthy food marketing at all times of the day and night when children are watching and listening
  • make public spaces, public events and retail environments free from unhealthy food marketing
  • prevent companies marketing unhealthy food directly to children with tactics like cartoons on product packaging, toys and prizes.
