AMCS CEO Kindleysides Departs After 16 Years

The long-serving chief executive of the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS), Darren Kindleysides, will step down this January after 16 years of transformational leadership, during which the organisation has achieved remarkable growth and significant milestones.

At the helm since 2009, Mr Kindleysides transformed AMCS from an organisation with just six employees in a Brisbane office to become one of the country's most important environment groups with 50 staff all around the country.

Under his stewardship, AMCS has been pivotal in driving improvements in the protection of Australia's marine environment. AMCS has played a leading role in the establishment of the largest national network of marine reserves in the world; in driving Australia's sustainable seafood revolution; in securing enduring protection for wildlife such as sharks and whales; and in achieving landmark reforms to safeguard the Great Barrier Reef from development and pollution.

Mr Kindleysides said: "Leading AMCS since 2009 has been the job of a lifetime. I count it a privilege to have fought for our oceans alongside such a smart, passionate and dedicated team.

"I'm proud that together, we have secured huge advances for the protection of Australia's precious marine life.

"The current decade is the most critical for the future of our environment in our lifetimes. Our oceans face a dual crisis - an extinction emergency and the escalating impacts of climate change.

"In the face of immense challenges, this mighty organisation is uniquely equipped to drive the change our oceans desperately need. With a clear, bold vision for a thriving marine future, a fearless and dedicated team, and the unwavering support of hundreds of thousands of passionate, ocean-loving supporters, AMCS is ready to help lead our oceans back from the brink.

"Saying goodbye is never easy, but it is made easier knowing that AMCS stands as a strong, capable champion for Australia's oceans during this defining moment in their history."

AMCS President Brian Donaldson said: "Darren leaves an enduring legacy not just for our magnificent organisation but for Australia's oceans. The future for Australia's threatened marine life is brighter for his dedication and leadership of AMCS.

"On behalf of our board, staff and supporters, we thank Darren for his work over many years and wish him and his family well for the future."

Mr Kindleysides will be taking up a new international role working to protect wildlife in January. AMCS Campaigns Director Tooni Mahto will be the interim CEO while AMCS undertakes the recruitment for our next chief executive.
