The Mining and Energy Union said today that maintaining jobs and conditions are the top priority after Anglo American announced yesterday that they will sell the entirety of their steelmaking coal assets in Queensland.
District President, Mitch Hughes said that the Union was focused on ensuring a seamless transition for workers at the affected sites.
Mr Hughes said that workers would continue to be covered by their current Enterprise Agreements and the Union would work with new employers, Peabody and BUMA to ensure industry standards are upheld.
"We understand there is always uncertainty for workers during transition of business. However, we want to reassure members that their enterprise agreement conditions will be maintained.
"As always, we are here to protect our members' entitlements and conditions.
The MEU will also be seeking to clarify future plans for the workforce at Grosvenor mine who are currently redeployed to other Anglo operations in QLD.
"QLD mining regions are highly dependent on the attitude and behaviour of the major mine operators in our industry.
"With the greater role Peabody and BUMA will play, this is an opportunity for them to demonstrate their commitment to our regions through their employment practices and contribution to the community."
