Animal Cruelty - Cannington

Cannington Police are seeking information regarding a series of incidents in Cannington on Friday 12 July 2024, during which it is alleged a small dog was attacked by its owner.

About 6:30pm, a member of the public reported seeing a man walking through the carpark of a shopping centre, towards Cecil Avenue, with a trolley and a small dog. Information received was that the man kicked the dog to its head, causing it shake in fear. Police patrolled the area, however the man was not immediately located.

About 7:15pm, another report was received in relation to a man attacking a dog at the intersection of Albany Highway and Nicholson Road. Information received was that a man had picked a dog up by its head and had thrown it into a trolley he was pushing. It was also reported the man punched the dog to its head.

A man matching the description provided was arrested a short time later. The dog was taken to an emergency vet, where it remains being treated.

A 47-year-old man has been charged with two counts of 'Animal Cruelty', and one count each of 'Disorderedly Behaviour' and 'Conduct Likely to Racially Harass'. He was refused bail and appeared in Perth Magistrates Court yesterday, Saturday 13 July 2024, and is next due to appear in Armadale Magistrates Court on Friday 2 August 2024.
