MEDIA STATEMENT
Today's announcement of $70m to rebuild the homes and infrastructure of Cabbage Tree Island proves the power of communities and governments working together.
Like so many others across our country, our community has felt the full brunt of natural disaster and the physical and emotional damage left in its wake.
The significance of today's announcement cannot be understated.
The security and hope it gives our community empowers us to create a self-determined future, and a huge opportunity to build a better lives for our children – one which is prosperous, safe and allows us to share our story of resilience with the nation.
On behalf of the Jali LALC, I'd especially like to thank Premier Perrottet who visited Cabbage Tree last week. He showed up, he listened, and he's taken decisive action in partnership with our community.
We also thank the Premier's team – Minister Cook, Minister Franklin and the many public servants that have worked so hard with us over the last few weeks.
I'd also like to that His Excellency, The Governor General David Hurley for his support and the ADF, who have worked tirelessly on the community clean up.
The support of the Commonwealth Government and Minister Wyatt has also been crucial in this success.
Finally, I'd also like to thank Currie Country Social Change for their support and assistance.
We look forward to all flood affected communities receiving support, including Coraki and the communities of Lismore.
The sun is shining much brighter on Cabbage Tree Island today, and we are excited about getting on with the job in partnership with the Commonwealth and NSW Government.
