The Governor has appointed current Tasmanian Magistrate Ken Stanton as Deputy Chief Magistrate.
Mr Stanton has served as a Magistrate since June 2017 and prior to this was a member of the Mental Health Tribunal and the Guardianship and Administration Board. He also worked as a Barrister-at-Law in Victoria and Tasmania for 18 years and in private practice for nine years.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett, congratulated Magistrate Stanton on his appointment.
"Magistrate Stanton is well respected among both other Magistrates and the wider legal profession," the Attorney-General said.
"Being based in Launceston, this appointment will provide the Magistrates Court with an enhanced leadership presence in the North of the State.
"Magistrate Stanton's detailed understanding of the operations of the Court coupled with his appreciation of both the challenges faced by the Court and also the opportunities for improvement, make him an ideal fit for the role.
"Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is continuing to improve our legal system and the critical institutions which uphold justice in Tasmania.
"On behalf of the Government, I congratulate Mr Stanton on his appointment to this important position within the Magistrates Court."
The position of Deputy Chief Magistrate became vacant following the appointment of the previous occupant as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.
Expressions of Interest were invited for the position of Deputy Chief Magistrate in May 2024 and the appointment has been made in accordance with the Protocol for Judicial Appointments.
