The Tasmanian Government is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms Leigh Mackey as a new Magistrate for the State of Tasmania.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett, warmly welcomed Ms Mackey to her new appointment.
"Ms Mackey's appointment will fill the vacant Magistrate's position that arose following the previous Deputy Chief Magistrate Michael Daly's appointment as an Associate Judge to the Supreme Court, which occurred earlier this year," the Attorney-General said.
"Ms Mackey has over 30 years' experience in the legal profession in Tasmania and comes to the position of Magistrate with extensive legal skills, expertise and knowledge as well as a strong understanding of the responsibilities of a Magistrate.
"Ms Mackey has been a Partner at Ogilvie Jennings since 1999, one of Tasmania's longest established legal firms and prior to that she served as a Solicitor at Jennings Elliott for over 7 years.
"Ms Mackey also holds a number of professional positions on Boards and Tribunals such as the Anti-Discrimination Tribunal, Police Review Board and Disciplinary Tribunal. She is also the current Chairperson of the Tasmanian Parole Board and Tasmanian Air Rescue Trust.
"On behalf of the Government, I congratulate Ms Mackey on her appointment as Magistrate.
"A thriving, robust justice system is integral to the successful delivery of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future – and our courts are a vital pillar of this institution."
Expressions of interest were sought for the new Magistrate position in May 2024 and the appointment follows a selection process undertaken in accordance with the Protocol for Judicial Appointments.
Ms Mackey will be sworn in on Monday 4 November 2024.
