The Tasmanian Liberal Government continues to make strong progress to deliver a replacement Burnie Courts Complex that is modern and fit-for-purpose, with design works set to commence.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett, said that the new complex will deliver more efficient and effective courts in the North West.
"Today I am delighted to announce that the Tasmanian Government has appointed local Tasmanian architecture firm, Xsquared Architects, as the successful team to design the replacement Burnie Courts Complex," the Attorney-General said.
"Xsquared Architects have a formidable track record of delivering outstanding finished products and has previously undertaken work on school, health and police station upgrades and builds across the State.
"The Tasmanian Government has committed $86.5 million to deliver the replacement Burnie Courts Complex, which will improve access to justice in the North and North West of the State, by providing contemporary fit-for-purpose infrastructure for our clients and stakeholders.
"Importantly, the project will work to revitalise the Burnie CBD and deliver jobs and investment for the North-West, with local businesses to benefit from increased trade during construction.
"Increased economic activity, job creation and efficient service delivery epitomises what we seek to achieve through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future.
"We are continuing our efforts to ensure that the Federal Government deliver a permanent Federal Circuit and Family Court presence for Burnie as part of this redevelopment."
The replacement of the Burnie Courts Complex will:
- ensure access to justice for the North-West community through ongoing Magistrates and Supreme Court services;
- improve safety and amenities for court-users;
- improve disability access; and
- enable contemporary functioning of the facilities, through the use of design and technology.
Xsquared Architects will commence from 3 June 2024. It is anticipated the plans will be submitted to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works before the end of the year.
The appointment of Xsquared Architects complements the Government's Buy Local Policy by supporting Tasmanian businesses and suppliers in securing contracts for public works for Tasmania.
