The Wagga Wagga Zoo & Aviary's resident Olive Python – affectionately known as Arnold – finally has a home to call his own.
The new 20 sq metre enclosure just inside the entrance to the free-flight aviary, gives Arnold plenty of room to stretch out, as well as his own pool, a climbing branch and a private "sun lounge" comprising a rock warmed by an infrared lamp.
Wagga Wagga City Council Zoo Curator Wendy McNamara said Arnold is a little anxious about the move from his previous, much more cosy home.
"Arnold first came to the zoo about two years ago and fitted inside a take-away container, but has since grown into a healthy adult around two metres long," Ms McNamara said.
"But Arnold will adapt to his new space. Olive Pythons are Australia's second largest species of snake, and when fully grown he may reach five metres in length."
Ms McNamara said the new enclosure does a great job of replicating his natural abode – a rocky area near water in an open forest or savannah.
