The results of an international art exchange to underline the important historical and ongoing relationship between Australia and Papua New Guinea will be exhibited at the Mulgrave Gallery later this year.
To be developed to commemorate Papua New Guinea's 50 years of political independence, Council has received $77,000 funding from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to develop 'The Invisible Line' through the Australian High Commission in Papua New Guinea.
Featuring works from four artists from each country, the exhibition will highlight the important relationship between the two nations through the lens of contemporary art and offer a powerful reflection of this cultural connection.
The exhibition is scheduled to take place at Mulgrave Gallery in August and will lead into the 50th anniversary celebrations on 16 September, much of which will occur at Fogarty Park.
Four artists with strong connections to Cairns, and a Council representative, will travel to Papua New Guinea to connect with local artists and begin formation of the exhibition.
Each of the artists are expected to produce two to three new works that engage deeply with the exhibition's central themes.
