Artist Brooke Whelan Begins Three-Month Studio Residency

Local artist Brooke Whelan has taken up residency in the Hyphen Creative Studio as the recipient of the 2025 Murray Arts Emerging Artist Residency Grant.

Asked what this residency represents, Whelan describes an opportunity to create a cohesive body of work that captures the influence of Wodonga and its architectural history.

"I plan to explore Wodonga and its surrounding areas, focusing on how its architecture, streetscapes, and working-class history contribute to a sense of place," she said.

"I'll be capturing photographs, sketching, and developing a series of paintings that reflect the town's atmosphere, memory, and quiet beauty."

Whelan's work explores themes of memory, identity and the beauty of rural and domestic spaces, a reflection of the artist's long-held fascination with houses and interiors.

"There's something deeply personal about the spaces people live in, and I love observing the way homes reflect the lives and histories of those who inhabit them," she said.

"Growing up in the country, I developed a deep appreciation for the understated charm of regional towns-the way the houses, old shops, and quiet streets hold layers of personal and collective history.

"These themes manifest in my work through the careful use of light, perspective, and color to evoke a sense of nostalgia and connection. My paintings often highlight the beauty in overlooked places, inviting viewers to reflect on their own memories and experiences of home and belonging."

Whelan's residency was made possible through her receipt of the 2025 Murray Arts Emerging Artist Residency Grant, sponsored by Murray Arts in partnership with Hyphen - Wodonga Library Gallery.

Speaking of the importance this type of opportunity presents for burgeoning artists, Whelan describes the opportunity as invaluable.

"Being an emerging artist can be a challenging path, so having recognition and resources to focus on creative exploration is really important," she said.

"This residency will allow me to immerse myself in a new environment, experiment with new ideas, and connect with the local community, all of which contribute to a stronger and more dynamic regional arts scene.

"Opportunities like this residency are crucial for regional artists, providing dedicated time, space, and financial support to develop their work without the pressures of everyday commitments."

Hyphen patrons will have the opportunity to view Whelan's work and speak directly with the artist through a series of Open Studios.

Discussing how she hopes to connect with those interested in learning more, Whelan sees the Open Studio's as offering a glimpse into her creative process and an opportunity to spark conversations about how art can capture the essence of place and memory.

"I also hope to engage with the community through Open Studio sessions, inviting conversations about nostalgia, identity, and the significance of familiar places in our lives," she said.

"I'd love for people to feel a sense of recognition in my work-perhaps seeing their own stories reflected in the landscapes and structures I depict.

"More than anything, I want to encourage curiosity and appreciation for the beauty in everyday surroundings, reminding people that art isn't just about grand subjects but can be found in the quiet, familiar moments of life."

Asked for some tips for young or emerging creatives, Whelan had a few.

"Stay curious - observe your surroundings, ask questions, and experiment with different mediums and techniques. Find inspiration in the everyday and embrace your own voice, don't feel pressure to follow trends. Trust your instincts and create work that feels authentic to you. Seek out opportunities within your community, connect with other artists, attend exhibitions and tap into your support network."

But the key, says Whelan, is just to keep making.

"Be persistent. Not everything will work, but each piece teaches you something new. Enjoy the process and keep creating."

Whelan's residency commenced on Monday, March 3 and will conclude on Sunday, June 1, 2025.
