Artists Announced For Geraldton Aboriginal Short Stay

  • Two Yamatji artists will design artworks for the Geraldton Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation project
  • Geraldton Short Stay facility being built by local Aboriginal registered building company GBSC Yurra

Two Yamatji artists have been commissioned to create artworks for the State Government's Geraldton Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation project.

The two artists were appointed following an Expression of Interest process and will be designing artworks for the entry, a glass mural and a half basketball court for the short stay.

Nicole Dickerson, based in Geraldton, has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Perth and the Mid West, and has a number of awards, commissions and public artworks under her belt.Nicole will be designing the half basketball court and entry mural at the short stay.

Justin Martin is based in Perth, and his paintings and sculpture works can be found across the metropolitan area from Rockingham to Joondalup, including schools, shopping centres, Perth Zoo and Whiteman Park. Justin will be designing the glazing for the common dining area.

As stated by Housing Minister John Carey:

"It's brilliant that two Yamatji artists will design the artworks for Western Australia's fourth Aboriginal Short Stay project.

"The artworks will help to give the Geraldton Short Stay a sense of place and identity and it will provide accommodation for people travelling to regional towns or centres and supporting people experiencing homelessness."

As stated by Geraldton MLA Lara Dalton:

"The Geraldton Short Stay is deeply important to our local community and it's great that two Yamatji artists have been appointed to create and design artworks for the project.

"These artworks will be localised to represent the Mid West region and I look forward to seeing the work both Nicole and Justin deliver for the Geraldton Short Stay."
