City of Darwin is seeking expressions of interest from local artists to help transform public spaces in Karama and Casuarina, as part of a pilot project for the Darwin Place and Liveability Plan.
Consultation took place during June to August 2024 to seek input on what makes Darwin liveable for our community.
Key priorities for the community were open space and recreation, physical connectivity, arts and culture and safety and security.
Based on this feedback, two locations have been selected for pilot projects which will test ideas on a small scale and highlight how shared spaces are essential for creating vibrant communities.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis encouraged artists to submit their interest in being involved in the pilot projects.
"We are calling for local artists to submit an expression of interest to revitalise two areas - a walkway between Trower Road and Strele Street in Casuarina and the footpath in Robyn Lesley Park, from Koolinda Crescent to Mullamulla Circuit, in Karama.
"We are looking for the successful artist to design and produce six stencils that can be used to paint on the pathways in the two locations.
"The aim of painting the pathways is to improve the amenity of the space, as well as promoting physical activity, leisure and community connectivity.
"The design should reflect the unique values and character of Darwin's people and communities and focus on elements such as local produce, bush tucker or fauna relevant to Darwin," he said.
The Place and Liveability Plan will build on the work City of Darwin has already undertaken towards creating a safe, liveable, healthy, cool and green, smart, vibrant and creative city.
Once complete, the Place and Liveability Plan will capture the unique needs, values and charter of Darwin's people and communities; reflect Darwin's diversity and present a picture of how Darwin can become more liveable into the future.
Expressions of interest close on Wednesday 23 October 2024.
