As part of the Smith Street Streetscape project, City of Darwin is calling for expressions of interest from Darwin-based visual artists and collaborators to help further transform the iconic city street.

The Smith Street Streetscape project will see a cool, green and dynamic pedestrian hub created in the heart of the city centre, with public art further enhancing the amenity of the area.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis encouraged local artists to submit an expression of interest that responds to the theme of Interconnection.

"The Smith Street Streetscape project aims to contribute to the greening, activation and placemaking opportunities of the area," Mr Vatskalis said.

"The theme for the public art is Interconnection and we are open to exploring a range of possibilities, including sculptures, integrated visual art and street furniture.

"The public art opportunities will complement other works that will revitalise Smith Street.

"We want the artwork to stimulate the imagination of the public and enrich the space.

"There are a number of opportunities available, including horizontal road murals and small-scale sculptures," he said.

The successful artist will be paid up to $20,000 and the artworks may be used for visual interventions on roadways, vertical infrastructure, urban furniture and stand-alone small-scale sculptures.

Guided site visits will be available for interested parties to discuss the project with City of Darwin staff.

The Smith Street Streetscape project is a further commitment towards City of Darwin's and the NT Government's common vision for Darwin's future as a liveable and tropical capital city.

Expressions of interest close on Sunday 8 September 2024.
