Bayside Gallery is proud to present the first major survey of early works by nationally renowned Brighton-based artist, Asher Bilu, one of Bayside's most esteemed local talents.
This exhibition offers audiences the chance to explore the foundational early works (1956-79) of Bilu's seven-decade practice which established him as a groundbreaking artist.
Curator Joanna Bosse describes Asher's practice as unique and unparalleled within Australian art. "Asher Bilu is indeed a remarkable and unique figure in Australia's recent history. Over the last seven decades, he has produced some of the most innovative and exploratory works of art seen in this country."
She adds, "Bilu's paintings, sculptures, and installations comprise a body of work that is ambitious for its unconventional materials and new technical methods. His subject matter is similarly expansive, reflecting his fascination with light, cosmology, science, and music, as well as a desire for sensation and beauty."
Many pieces are on loan from private and public collections, making this exhibition as special for the artist as visitors to the gallery. "I am seeing some of my early work for the first time in 60 years," Asher said. "It is magic to be supported by Council in this way. I hope it opens the eyes of a much broader audience to something new."
A series of events will accompany the free exhibition, providing deeper insights into Asher Bilu's practice and offering interactive experiences.
Infinicopia (2017-18)

As an adjunct to the exhibition Asher Bilu: Early works 1956-79, the historic Brighton Town Hall will be transformed by Asher Bilu with a spectacular 12 x 9 metre immersive installation Infinicopia (2017-18).
The title Infinicopia is derived from David Foster Wallace's 2003 book Everything and more and the work comprises hundreds of 'modules', each constructed from a varied number of hand-painted shapes. This vast floor-based installation forms an intricate and expansive sculpture composed of separate interlocking pieces, each with its own stunning complexity.
