The funding will transform a former Victorian reservoir next to the Sherwood Observatory into a cutting-edge Science Discovery Centre and Planetarium.
A unique visitor experience in Sutton
The Science Discovery Centre and Planetarium is a joint development project between the Council and Mansfield & Sutton Astronomical Society.
The new centre will include:
- a 10-metre diameter planetarium dome
- new meeting facilities and a spacious exhibition area
- a high-resolution digital projection system
- a café to cater to the needs of visitors
The centre will focus on delivering STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) content in an exciting way. It will help raise awareness of the career opportunities available in STEM related industries.
Cllr Matthew Relf, Executive Lead Member for Growth, Regeneration and Local Planning at Ashfield District Council, said:
The importance of having access to a purpose-built science facility locally can't be underestimated; allowing children and adults who can't necessarily travel to London or Birmingham or Leicester the chance to experience the magic of space on their doorstep.
This new centre promises to be a truly unique and exciting destination, one that:
- elevates the prominence of the region
- acts as a magnet, attracting visitors from far and wide
Sherwood Observatory also recently announced its partnership with the Air and Space Institute (ASI) - a Town Deal funded project in Newark - a collaboration aimed at inspiring the next generation through STEM education.
