Washington, D.C.-The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) is expanding its portfolio of journals with the launch of ASM Animal Microbiology, a journal dedicated to advancing research on animal-associated microbes and their impact on health, disease and productivity. The journal will begin accepting submissions later this year and plans to publish its first articles in 2026.
ASM Animal Microbiology will be ASM's 17th peer-reviewed journal and will be published as an open access journal under the recently announced Subscribe to Open model. It becomes the 7th journal to adopt this model, adding to ASM's cadre of journals that cover topics ranging from applied and environmental microbiology to bacteriology, clinical microbiology, systems biology, virology and more.
The importance of animal microbiology and a One Health approach continues to grow in areas, such as public health, food safety and veterinary sciences. ASM Animal Microbiology will provide an essential platform for research in veterinary microbiology, zoonotic diseases, animal microbiomes, antimicrobial resistance in animal populations and animal drugs and therapeutics. The journal will uphold rigorous scientific standards while welcoming submissions focusing on both basic and applied research.
"The launch of ASM Animal Microbiology comes at a critical time as we face urgent global challenges related to zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance and livestock health. ASM remains dedicated to fostering scientific progress by providing researchers with a forum to share high-quality and impactful research in these important areas," said Melissa Junior, Executive Publisher at ASM.
To lead this new journal, ASM Journals has launched its search for an editor in chief (EiC). The selected EiC will start their 5-year renewable term on July 1, 2025, and will be vital in shaping the journal's strategic direction. The EiC will lead a team of editors and an editorial board representing a wide range of sub-disciplines. Additionally, the EiC will help align ASM Animal Microbiology with ASM's established journals, such as Applied and Environmental Microbiology® and Journal of Clinical Microbiology®.
ASM invites experts in veterinary microbiology or zoonotic diseases to apply. Individuals are also encouraged to submit nominations for this prestigious leadership opportunity on behalf of their colleagues. Applications are due by May 2, 2025.
Apply online to be considered for the ASM Animal Microbiology EiC position, and an ASM Journals staff member will contact you if you are shortlisted, or email candidate nominations to [email protected].
