Switchboard verification requirements

Clause 2.10.3.2 of AS/NZS 3000:2018 (Wiring Rules) requires that all switchboards rated at 125 A per phase or greater or subject to a 10 kA fault potential or greater must comply with either AS/NZS 3439 series (now superseded) or the AS/NZS 61439:2016 series.

When preparing tender submissions for electrical installations, licensed electrical contractors are advised to make sure that these types of switchboards will be manufactured and built to comply with this Clause. A written assurance should be obtained from the manufacturer or builder of switchboards forming part of a tender.

Prior to taking delivery of the switchboards, electrical contractors are advised to obtain documentation from their switchboard manufacturer or supplier verifying that the switchboard complies with AS/NZS 61439. They should not attempt to install the switchboard without this assurance.

Network operator or Building and Energy Inspectors will expect to sight the documentation as part of their inspection.

Switchboards previously verified as complying with AS/NZS 3439 do not need to be re-verified.
