Assault of inmate at Atlantic Institution

On June 18, 2022, a number of inmates were involved in a physical altercation at Atlantic Institution, a maximum security federal institution. The injured inmates were evaluated by staff members and three inmates were transported to an outside hospital to receive treatment. All three inmates have since returned to the institution.

The assailants have been identified and the appropriate actions have been taken. The Blackville detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the institution are presently investigating the incident.

The safety and security of inmates, staff and the public remain the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

CSC examines each incident of violence to find out how it can better prevent and address these situations and share any information and practices with police, other agencies and partners to prevent these types of situations.
