The logo for Canberra's newest public school, Aunty Agnes Shea High School, has been revealed ahead of the school's opening in 2025.
The new school in north Gungahlin is named after the late senior Ngunnawal Elder Aunty Agnes Shea OAM, who dedicated her life to bettering the world for future generations.
Minister for Education and Youth Affairs Yvette Berry revealed the school's logo today, which was co-designed with Aunty Agnes' family.
The logo is based on an artwork 'Journey' painted by Selina Walker about her esteemed grandmother.
"I am really pleased to reveal the beautiful logo for Aunty Agnes Shea High School, which was co-designed with her family," Minister Berry said.
"The logo is derived from elements of Selina's artwork, which holds special meaning about Aunty Agnes Shea and education.
"Having a logo that is deeply connected to Aunty Agnes is a great starting point for building a strong cultural and family connection with the school."
The Minister also announced that, following further consultation with family, the school's official name now also includes the honorific Aunty.
This updated name – Aunty Agnes Shea High School – holds significant meaning.
"The school's name recognises and pays respect to the Senior Ngunnawal Elder status and contributions of Aunty Agnes Shea," Minister Berry said.
Future students at the school and their families will have the opportunity to work with the Education Directorate and inaugural Principal Daniel Mowbray on the school uniform design, which will also being drawn from the 'Journey' artwork, ahead of the school's opening for the 2025 school year.
