The Australian Greens are rallying behind the students and staff at Sydney Unviersity who have started an encampment on the quad lawns, protesting institutional complicity in Israel's genocide in Gaza.
Greens Deputy Leader and spokesperson for Education, Senator Mehreen Faruqi, joined the students in protest today.
Quotes attributed to Senator Faruqi:
"I am honoured to be in solidarity with the students and staff at Sydney Uni, and inspired by their courage and compassion that is so clearly lacking in our complicit government and institutions.
"While the Labor government and university management dont give cause for hope, it is courageous staff and students camping out in solidarity with Palestinians who are showing us what standing up and speaking out for justice looks like.
"Universities should be places of public good, promoting justice and humanity. Yet they have partnerships and investments in major arms manufacturers contributing to Israel's genocide in Gaza. This is morally reprehensible. Universities must disclose and divest.
"I draw inspiration from the justice for Palestine movement sweeping the world and campuses from Columbia University in New York, to Sydney University on Gadigal land. Unlike the Albanese Labor government, we can rely on courageous student activism to be on the right side of history.
"Enough is enough. The Greens are with the students. I will continue to expose the Albanese government's role in genocide and push for them to listen to the people of Australia. They must sanction Israel, urgently increase funding to UNRWA and call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire."
