Today, we mourn the passing of the Honourable Austin Asche AC KC, a man whose contributions to the Northern Territory and to Australia have left a legacy of service, leadership, and dedication.
Austin Asche's career began in 1944 with his service in the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II, where he demonstrated courage and commitment to his country. After the war, he pursued a legal career that would see him rise to some of the highest positions in the Northern Territory. From 1987 to 1993, he served as Chief Justice of the Northern Territory. He continued his public service as the Territory's Administrator from 1993 to 1997, during which he was appointed a Knight of Grace of the Order of St John in 1993 and a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1994 in recognition of his outstanding contributions.
After retiring in 1997, Austin remained a vital force in the Northern Territory community. He served as the Chair of the Northern Territory Law Reform Committee, where his expertise in justice continued to guide those around him. He also held the roles of adjunct professor in Law and Emeritus Chancellor at Charles Darwin University, further demonstrating his lifelong commitment to education and the development of future leaders.
Beyond his judicial and administrative achievements, Austin was a passionate advocate for education and the community, earning respect for his tireless work.
On behalf of all Territorians, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this time of loss. Austin's life was one of exemplary service and lasting impact, and his memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege to know him.
He was 99.
