Australia Announces New High Commissioner To Nauru 23 December

Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

Today I announce the appointment of Mr Matthew Barclay as Australia's next High Commissioner to the Republic of Nauru.

Nauru and Australia have recently signed a treaty that elevates our long-standing relationship to an integrated economic, social and security partnership. The treaty builds on the deep foundations of our close bilateral relationship and will help secure Nauru's long-term economic resilience and security.

Australia is Nauru's largest development, trade and security partner. We are committed to deepening this partnership and working with Nauru on shared priorities including economic resilience, infrastructure, health, and education, building on decades of close cooperation.

Mr Barclay is a career public servant and was most recently Director of Solomon Islands Political and Strategy Section.

He has previously served as Consul-General in Phuket with earlier postings in Indonesia, Afghanistan, and Timor-Leste.

I thank outgoing High Commissioner Sara Moriarty for her contributions to advancing Australia's interests in Nauru since January 2024.
