Police have praised the behaviour of crowds joining in Australia Day events across Sydney and regional areas today.
Operation Australia Day 2024 commenced yesterday (Thursday 25 January 2024) and will continue until 11.59pm on Sunday (28 January 2024)
The high-visibility policing operation saw general duties officers supported by specialist units including the Police Transport Command, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Public Order and Riot Squad, Marine Area Command, Operations Support Group, Mounted Unit, Dog Unit and PolAir, to ensure a safe and secure environment for the community.
Today (Friday 26 January 2024), 28 charges were laid and 569 infringement notices were issued for a range of offences including affray, PCA, possess prohibited drugs and supply prohibited drugs.
Operation Commander, Assistant Commissioner Stephen Hegarty, said the majority of people were well-behaved and enjoyed their activities safely and responsibly.
"Considering the hot weather and significant crowds enjoying events today, the vast majority celebrated safely, which made for a family-friendly day," Assistant Commissioner Hegarty said.
"The main issue for police were pockets of anti-social and dangerous behaviour, however, swift and early action ensured these issues did not ruin the day for everyone else.
"As celebrations continue this evening and over the long weekend, make sure you look out for your friends and if you're having a drink – have a plan B, do not drive," Assistant Commissioner Hegarty.
Officers will continue to be highly visible across the state to ensure a safe and secure environment for the community as the long weekend continues.
