Australia, Japan Unite to Modernize Agri-Food Chains

The Hon Julie Collins MP
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry

Relations between Australia and Japan have been further strengthened today, with the signing of a statement of intent on modernising agri-food value chains.

The agreement between the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries builds on a long history of bilateral agricultural cooperation and provides a mechanism for both nations to continue to work together to further enhance our safe, secure and resilient agri-food value chains.

The partnership will enhance interpersonal links between the two countries, facilitating knowledge sharing that will lead to improved efficiencies and mutual benefits for both nations.

Japan is a highly valued trading partner and Australia's third largest agriculture, fisheries and forestry export market, valued at $6.3 billion in 2023-24.

This included $1.9 billion worth of beef and veal, $1 billion worth of canola and more than $500 million worth of wheat.

Bolstering our bilateral agricultural relationship is important for boosting our competitiveness in Japan's market and maintaining technical market access for our products.
