Australia Tackles Emissions Reporting After CCA Review

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

The Australian Government has responded to the Climate Change Authority's (CCA) 2023 review of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) scheme.

The NGER scheme is Australia's national system for reporting:

  • greenhouse gas emissions
  • energy consumption
  • energy production by Australian corporations.

The review found the NGER scheme was performing well and supported Australia's net zero transformation but could benefit from some enhancements including:

  • better data transparency
  • wider coverage
  • improved methane emissions measurement.

The CCA made 25 recommendations for the NGER scheme and the government agreed:

  • fully to 11 of the CCA's recommendations
  • in principle to 13 recommendations
  • noted 1 recommendation.

The government has already consulted on and made some improvements to the NGER scheme in July 2024.
