Australian FM Statement On Dissolution Of Move Forward Party

Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

Australia notes the Thai Constitutional Court decision on 7 August to dissolve the Move Forward Party and impose a political ban on eleven current and former members of its executive.

Australia believes that inclusivity, pluralism and freedom of expression are key democratic principles. These principles are not served by the dissolution of the Move Forward Party.

Thai citizens overwhelmingly supported the May 2023 election process with a record turnout of 75.22 per cent. The Move Forward Party won over 14 million votes.

As a close friend and partner Australia encourages Thailand to ensure inclusive political participation that reflects the will of the people.
