More high-quality Australian halal red meat will soon be available in Malaysia, with the approval of seven new export establishments under the Albanese Labor Government.
This will take the total number of halal-certified Australian operations to 25, making Australia one of Malysia's biggest suppliers of halal beef and sheepmeat products.
Malaysia is already Australia's third largest market for sheepmeat, with a large and growing population of young and wealthy diners who are seeking out the best available produce.
The Malaysian Department of Veterinary Services confirmed the approval of the new establishments on December 31, basing its decision on audits conducted earlier in the year.
The listing approval process for Australian export establishments to gain access to the Malaysian market is complex, with some establishments waiting over two years to secure access to the Malaysian market.
Their decision is a powerful statement of confidence in Australian halal meat production quality and practice, and will yield real results for local producers and processors.
It is also important for Australia's reputation as a leader in the supply of halal products globally and reflects the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry's close cooperation with Malaysian halal authority, the Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM).
Malaysia is already a significant market for Australian beef and sheep meat, valued at over $333 million in 2023/24. With these new accreditations, that number is likely to rise in 2024/25.
