Journalist and entrepreneur Mónica Guzmán will discuss how to engage in civil discourse in politically polarizing times during a keynote presentation at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, in the Mandela Room located in the University Union at Binghamton University. This event is free and open to the public.
A Curiosity Workshop for all Binghamton University faculty, staff, students and community members will also take place at 1:30 p.m. in room UU-215 of the University Union. Registration is available on B-Engaged.
Guzmán will discuss how to have civil conversations despite increased partisanship and growing divisions. Her book 'I Never Thought of It That Way' describes her experience as the liberal daughter of two Mexican immigrants who voted for Donald Trump. She uses this insight to encourage readers to look past their differences using the power of curiosity, asking questions and learning from those they disagree with.
Guzmán is senior fellow for public practice at Braver Angels, a nonprofit working to depolarize America; host of A Braver Way, a podcast that equips people with the tools they need to bridge the political divide in their everyday lives; and founder and CEO of Reclaim Curiosity, an organization working to build a more curious world.
This talk is the keynote presentation for The Common Read Experience, a program that helps students gain new perspectives on the most important issues of our days, learn how to engage in constructive dialogue and debate, and acclimate to the intellectual life of a premier university.
