AVA Launches Free Vet Hotline for Queensland Floods

As floods cause devastating impacts for primary producers in western Queensland (QLD), the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) has coordinated a Queensland Floods Veterinary Hotline for veterinarians and flood impacted graziers.

The hotline, which offers advice and support to veterinarians impacted by or assisting with the flood response, is also open to affected graziers. The phone hotline is operated by volunteer AVA members who are experienced production animal veterinarians.

"The number of animals affected is alarming, and our thoughts go out to those who have lost infrastructure and livestock," AVA President Dr Sally Colgan said.

"By setting up this hotline, veterinarians and graziers on the ground in the flood impacted areas will be supported and have somewhere to turn for questions and veterinary advice.

"Vets play a crucial role in emergency response, from assessing and treating injured livestock to advising graziers on disease risks following flood events."

An AVA Point of Contact has been established to support communication between veterinarians and QLD disaster response teams. The AVA staff member is responsible for the distribution of information to veterinarians, and acts as a pathway for veterinarians to inform government of emerging issues.

Australian Cattle Veterinarians (ACV) President Dr Stacey Rae said she has family and friends who have received over twice their annual rainfall in just 3 days.

"This hotline is essential and it ensures that those in the field have real-time access to veterinary expertise and advice," she said.

"It's critical that we all work together. Whether you need advice on disease prevention, emergency care, or navigating recovery efforts, we encourage you to use this hotline."
