Balancing Work and Life for Success

Department of Defence

Thriving in high tempo environments and being exceptionally organised are traits personnel capability specialists like Corporal Jacki Chan Tie require to succeed.

Corporal Chan Tie is currently posted to 23 Squadron at RAAF Base Amberley and said working for the biggest city squadron in Air Force and on a super base can be intimidating but, with the right mindset and attitude, you can thrive.

"As we provide specialised advice and guidance to all 23 Squadron personnel on human resource policy, procedures and governance, it can become a very high-tempo workplace," Corporal Chan Tie said.

"But if you can manage your work-life balance then you will be able to excel in your career and take advantage of all the opportunities to explore the wider Defence Force."

A job as a personnel capability specialist requires a high level of oral, aural and written skills.

It is also beneficial to have good time management, the ability to prioritise competing objectives and the capacity to maintain mental acuity, situational awareness and mental health self-care.

Corporal Chan Tie said there were many things she enjoyed about her job.

"The opportunity to network with all types of people in the ADF and friendly nations is probably one of the most enjoyable aspects of my job," she said.

"I have met many people from diverse backgrounds, which has been very educational. I have also had the opportunity to deploy on HADR (humanitarian assistance and disaster relief), exercises and operations both locally and overseas."

Corporal Chan Tie had these words of advice for anyone considering a career in personnel capability or joining the team at 23 Squadron.

"Being a personnel capability specialist can be very routine and involves a lot of form processing, email traffic and customer service," she said.

"Although at 23 Squadron I have been able to mix things up by participating in annual AFL carnivals, regular PT sessions, Dauntless club social events and the 'Day in the Life Of' (DILO) initiative.

"We also have the opportunity to walk the military working dogs - at the Security Forces section, the opportunities are endless."

23 Squadron in Amberley is part of Combat Support Group and includes logistics, security, physical training instructors, mechanical equipment operations and maintenance section, fire, catering, movements, supply and personnel capability.
