The Prime Minister has appointed Baroness Nemat Shafik DBE as the Victoria and Albert Museum from 01 January 2025 until 31 December 2029
Baroness Nemat Shafik DBE
Baroness Shafik is an economist, policymaker, and higher education leader who has spent over three decades in leadership roles across a range of prominent international, national and academic institutions. She is currently chairing a major review of international development for the UK government and is a cross-bench peer in the House of Lords. Previously, she was the President of Columbia University and of the London School of Economics and Political Science, Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Permanent Secretary of the United Kingdom's Department for International Development and the youngest-ever vice president of the World Bank.
She received a Damehood for services to the global economy, an honorary fellowship of the British Academy and of St. Antony's College at Oxford University, published numerous books and articles and has six honorary doctorates. She currently serves as a member of the board of the Gates Foundation, a distinguished Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research, a member of the Council of Foreign Relations and previously served as Deputy Chair and a trustee of the British Museum.
Remuneration and Governance Code
The Chair of Victoria and Albert Museum is not remunerated. This appointment has been made in accordance with the Cabinet Office's Governance Code on Public Appointments . The appointments process is regulated by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Under the Code, any significant political activity undertaken by an appointee in the last five years must be declared. This is defined as including holding office, public speaking, making a recordable donation, or candidature for election. Baroness Shafik has declared she does not undertake any political activity.
