A collaboration between The Barossa Council and Light Regional Council will see a free online leadership program delivered to young people living in our Council regions during May and June.
The Barossa and Light Emerging Young Leaders Program has been designed for young people aged between 14 and 25 years who identify as having a disability, being deaf, neurodiverse, and/or having lived experience of mental health issues.
Two programs will be offered as part of the pilot; for young people aged 18-25 years (applications close 14 April) and for young people aged 14-17 years (applications close 13 May).
Up to 12 young people will participate in each program, with the aim of growing their leadership and advocacy skills and promoting civic participation to:
- Develop their understanding of self
- Develop their leadership, teamwork, communication, and project skills
- Improve their understanding of access, inclusion, and advocacy
- Learn from and work with other leaders living with disability
There is no cost to participate in the program, and all materials will be supplied.
Barossa Mayor Bim Lange welcomed the program, saying it was a great example of grass-roots community capacity building.
This program will give local young people the skills, tools and most importantly the confidence to live their best lives, actively participate in the community and advocate for both themselves and others.
The program is supported by the Department of Human Services and is based on the YDAS Young Leaders Program created by Youth Disability Advocacy Service & Duke of Edinburgh Victoria.
