Barraba And Nundle Australia Day Award Winners

The Tamworth Regional Australia Day Awards have recognised community members and groups for their exceptional contributions to the community with three winners announced for Barraba and one winner announced for Nundle.

The 2024 Barraba Citizen of the Year Award was presented to Jenny Simpson for the many roles she plays in the community. Along with volunteering at Barraba Meals on Wheels and the Claypan Gallery, she has also worked to raise funds for equipment such as the low falls prevention bed at the hospital and raising funds for Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Ruby Mae's Wish.

The Barraba Frank Darlington Young Achiever of the Year was presented to Akira Kanno who recorded personal best times at both the State Athletics and State Swimming Championships, making it into the finals for the latter. Akira was Junior champion at the Barraba show for photography and primary section runner up at the Barraba Memorial Clock poetry competition.

The final Award given on the day went to the Barraba Sports Shear and Wool Handling event for the Barraba Community Event of the Year. This competition has added a new spin into the Barraba Show with entertainment for spectators focused on the sheep industry and is also a nod to Barraba's rich history with the wool industry.

Shining a spotlight in Nundle, Cheryl Sipple received a the Nundle Community Recognition Award. Cheryl has volunteered at the Sport & Recreation Club for 10 years and has served on the Board for five years. Cheryl also undertakes a multitude of duties with some including coordinating Bowling Club events, working in the bar/kitchen, general administrative duties and looking after the lawn and greens.

Tamworth Region Mayor Russell Webb sent his congratulations to the winners across the region and thanked them for their contributions to the community.

"It is always such a heart-warming day to recognise those who have made, and continue to make, a significant contribution to our wonderful region. I thank all of our nominees for the awards in Tamworth, Manilla, Barraba and Nundle for their role in making our community the wonderful place it is."

The Barraba awards were presented by Australia Day Ambassador Mel Thomas. Ms Sipple was presented her award by Tamworth Region Councillor Charles Impey.
