Bass Coast Shire Council has elected Cr Brett Tessari as Mayor at a Special Council Meeting today following Cr Rochelle Halstead standing down from the position.
Cr Tessari, a long-time local and third-generation Wonthaggi resident, brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served as both Mayor and Deputy Mayor across multiple Council terms.
Cr Tessari said he was honoured to take on the role and continue building on the strong foundations established by Council.
"It is a privilege to serve as Mayor and represent the Bass Coast community," Cr Tessari said.
"We have a clear direction through our Community Vision, Council Plan and the strategies already in place.
"Our focus now is on delivering for the community and continuing to advocate for important local priorities, including the redevelopment of the Bass Coast Aquatic Centre, a future outcome for the former Wonthaggi Secondary College site, better transport and health infrastructure, and strong, connected towns and rural communities.
"We know councils are working in a challenging financial environment, with rising costs and rate cap limits. It means we need to make very careful decisions about where we invest, while continuing to deliver the services and infrastructure our community relies on."
Bass Coast Shire Council enters this term with key planning and advocacy frameworks already in place, providing a solid foundation for decision-making and long-term investment. Council's Draft Budget 2026-27, currently out for community consultation, reflects a balanced approach to maintaining services, renewing infrastructure and planning for future growth, while responding to ongoing cost pressures. Cr Tessari encouraged residents, businesses and stakeholders with the opportunity to review the proposed investment and share feedback on Council's priorities for the year ahead.
Cr Ron Bauer was elected Deputy Mayor. An Island Ward Councillor with a long connection to the Bass Coast community, Cr Bauer said he looked forward to supporting Mayor Tessari and working collaboratively across Council.
"I'm pleased to take on the role of Deputy Mayor and continue representing the community," Cr Bauer said.
"We have a committed Council group, a clear direction and a shared responsibility to deliver outcomes that matter to our residents.
"Working together, we can continue strengthening partnerships, advocating to other levels of government and ensuring Bass Coast remains a great place to live, work and visit."
Council's focus over the coming year will remain on delivering projects, strengthening partnerships and advocating for the infrastructure and services needed to support a growing community.
