The Australian Government declared an area off of northern Tasmania's Bass Strait as suitable for offshore wind development on 12 December 2024.
The zone will:
- maximise use of local businesses, manufacturers and workers
- create opportunities for local apprenticeships and reskilling
- Provide potential to generate 20 GW of offshore wind energy - enough to power millions of homes
- drive local economic benefit and opportunities for Tasmania
- help us secure reliable and cheaper energy for households and businesses
- help us reach net zero emissions by 2050.
The declaration follows consultation with:
- local communities
- state and local government representatives
- First Nations people
- existing industries including shipping, defence, fishing, and other marine users.
Bass Strait is the sixth area declared suitable for offshore wind development:
- Gippsland, Victoria
- Hunter, New South Wales
- Sothern Ocean, Victoria
- Illawarra, New South Wales
- Indian Ocean off Bunbury, Western Australia.
