Bee-autiful Workers Carry Mighty Workload

Jane Howlett, Minister for Primary Industries and Water

Bees are among the unsung heroes in our agriculture sector, but their importance to our crops and natural habitat cannot be understated.

Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Jane Howlett, said the Tasmanian Government recognises the important work that apiarists all over the State do to help with the pollination of plants and the production of world class honey.

"Today, on World Bee Day, we acknowledge that bees play a pivotal role in farming and food security," Minister Howlett said.

"Over the past year, Biosecurity Tasmania and the State's beekeepers have been vigilant in their efforts to protect hives across Tasmania from pests and diseases, specifically the small hive beetle.

"As of 22 April 2024, the state's small hive beetle response activities ceased and the previously declared General Biosecurity Direction (small hive beetle) and the Bee Movement Restriction Area in the State's North West have been revoked.

"Congratulations to Biosecurity Tasmania, industry, and the community for participating in the quick and effective response.

"There are thousands of beehives across Tasmania and we have a lot to be grateful for the professionalism of the State's apiarists and the strength of the bee population and honey and pollination sectors."

Under the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future the Tasmanian Government's is investing $5 million in biosecurity to protect our borders against pest and disease incursions, safeguard animal welfare and manage risk to primary industries.

This includes $3 million over four years to strengthen resources and expertise in supporting Tasmania to be disease free and protecting industries through import risk and pest control.
