Bega Valley Shire Council is proudly taking part in Clean Up Australia Day and invites all residents to join this important community effort to keep our beautiful shire clean.
This year, two Clean Up Australia Day events will be held in Merimbula on Tuesday 25 February from 8.30am to 10.30am - one at Spencer Park and the other at Short Point.
Mayor Russell Fitzpatrick emphasised the vital role the community plays in waste reduction and environmental conservation.
"Clean Up Australia Day has always been a great way to get people together and take practical steps to reduce the litter that makes its way into our beautiful waterways and other natural surroundings," Mayor Fitzpatrick said.
"Last year, the campaign collected an estimated 140,000 bags of litter nationally, highlighting the incredible impact these clean-up events make and the efforts of the volunteers.
"By dedicating a couple of hours to collect litter, we can make a meaningful difference in preserving the natural beauty of the Bega Valley and ensure it remains pristine for future generations."
The Spencer Park clean-up will begin at the park and finish at Bar Beach, while the Short Point clean-up will cover the beach, the reserve and the carpark and BBQ area.
Volunteers will receive waste and recycling bags, and gloves, and are encouraged to wear covered shoes and be sun smart.
"As a thank you, volunteers can enjoy a free coffee or non-alcoholic beverage of choice. Please bring your keep cup or mug to help us reduce waste," Mayor Fitzpatrick said.
"Let's come together as a community and turn the tide on litter, protecting the places we love for everyone to enjoy."
